It is a problem when religious symbols become widespread and therefore lose their religious significance. But the fear of dilution isn’t really an issue here — the bindi has lost whatever religious significance it once had to Hindus some time ago, and is now used mostly for decoration. Madonna and Gwen Stefani didn’t turn the bindi into a fashion statement when they adopted it in the 90s — we desi women already did so years before that.

What makes the non-South Asian person’s use of the bindi problematic is the fact that a pop star like Selena Gomez wearing one is guaranteed to be better received than I would if I were to step out of the house rocking a dot on my forehead. On her, it’s a bold new look; on me, it’s a symbol of my failure to assimilate. On her, it’s unquestionably cool; on me, it’s yet another marker of my Otherness, another thing that makes me different from other American girls. If the use of the bindi by mainstream pop stars made it easier for South Asian women to wear it, I’d be all for its proliferation — but it doesn’t. They lend the bindi an aura of cool that a desi woman simply can’t compete with, often with the privilege of automatic acceptance in a society when many non-white women must fight for it.

I understand being a little flummoxed at the rage that the bindi issue inspires in our community. The anger always seems disproportionate to the crime. But will I celebrate the “mainstreaming” of a South Asian fashion item? Nope. Not when the mainstream doesn’t accept the people who created it.

I swear by Cthulhu, if you ever come at me with “aha! I have refuted your position on this complex sociological issue by visiting Dictionary.com!” I will personally come find you and make you write a 10,000 word essay on the purpose of a dictionary.

What the fuck, people. If we’re talking about Mendelian laws of inheritance, do you look to the fucking dictionary? If we’re talking about planetary geology, do you look to the fucking dictionary? I mean, yes, the dictionary will give you definitions for that shit - and it will absolutely be helpful if you know absolutely fuck-all about those words, because it can point you in the right general direction!

But if you’re having a conversation about those subjects - a conversation which pre-supposes that you know what those things actually fucking are - would you try to refute someone’s point by being like “WELL I DIDN’T SEE IT IN THE DICTIONARY”? Or would you maybe read a fucking book on genetics or astronomy - you know, like any rational sentient being would do?

There are absolutely times when the dictionary is of enormous help - but any tool is only useful when you’re making good use of it. Referring to the fucking dictionary when you’re talking about complex sociological institutions and constructs is like trying to use a carpenter’s level for neurosurgery: it’s proof positive that you don’t understand the concept/task at hand OR the tool you’re trying to use.

White Privilege is being able to complain Reverse Racism exists because you’ll never have to experience it as a systematic institution, but instead were merely made uncomfortable for a few seconds because of your feelings of white guilt. White privilege is being able to use said white guilt to consistently silence the complaints of POC by saying racism is no longer real or there because you said so, and having the whole world now reluctant to discuss it because you said so.

Let me reduce your culture to a party theme, a costume that I wear on Halloween, a hipster fad or a tattoo. Let me take your culture and sell it at Claires in the mall. Let me take your culture and whitewash it into nothing. Oh you don’t have to let me, because I’m going to anyways. Because being racist doesn’t negatively affect me at all. I live in a society, a white supremacy that encourages me to appropriate your culture and make it white culture. And I will do exactly that.

The problem with cultural appropriation is that it replaces the original with a copy created by the dominant culture. It dilutes the original, removes all symbolic value from it and replaces it with a ready to consume product devoid of context and meaning.

Cultural appropriation, at its most extreme, is a violent form of colonization because it removes the original group behind the culture and reinforces stereotypes about that group (i.e. ALL First Nation folks are reduced to “war bonnets”, whether their culture uses them or not; all Latin@s are reduced to a stylized version of Catholicism regardless of their spirituality; etc.). The mechanism of commodifying a culture ends up being a tool to re-inforce [sic] racism as it reduces the people behind those cultures to a mere cartoon like representation of their realities. It’s a great way to ultimately Other and objectify entire groups of people by taking something that is dynamic and ever evolving and freezing it for a marketing photo opportunity.

jiyongsleftnut asked: “So I have been going through your blog a bit tonight, and it really feels like theres only two sides. PoC and White. But I fall in the middle. I'm a half Vietnamese and half white girl. I was raised by a white mother and family but I do touch through my Asian roots freely. I have never found a blog for anyone like me. Because I am treated as a white girl who goes tanning and a "weeaboo". Everyone has a one sided story. It's only right for those who are fully one race not people who are mixed...”

Oh, sweetie, if I focus overwhelming on PoC, it’s because I am one. This is a personal blog, I discuss stuff that’s relevant to me (though nowadays I mostly reblog things sry). That doesn’t however invalidate your identity!

If you’re looking for a community/to share your story, you should try angryasiangirlsunited! Mixed race folk are more than welcome!

EDIT:

svartskalleroy said: also recommend weareallmixedup.tumblr.com it’s for mixed poc specifically

If I were white, it would be assumed that I’m a citizen of the United States.

It would be assumed that I can speak English pretty well, and others would be surprised if I could not speak English well.

But Asian Americans and other POCs often get asked questions like, “Do you speak X? Where are you from? No, no, like where are your parents from? No, you know what I mean!”

I’m a fourth generation Japanese American. My grandparents speak English fluently because they were, you know, born and raised here. But that doesn’t stop others from asking me this kind of shit.

Having white privilege means that you are the default “American”. Non-white Americans have to constantly attempt to prove their “Americanness” if they are to be viewed as “real” citizens.

And of course, this can be complicated so much when talking about indigenous issues…

if i were white i wouldn’t have to worry about my hair being “acceptable” when i go to work or to interviews or media events.

if i were white i wouldn’t have to be labelled a slut because of the color of my skin (regardless of how frequently i have sex, or what kind of clothes i wear. this is NOT to say that white women are never labelled as sluts because they are, but the dynamics for a Black woman are different),

if i were white people would automatically assume i got into a good school because i worked for it.

if i were white people would probably see me as quirky and not ghetto.

if i were white i wouldn’t get anons calling me a nigger all the damn time.

if i were white people would see me as the ultimate face of femininity.

if i were white i’d see more of myself on television and in movies (with more depth, not playing the role of a “mammy” or a ‘jezebel’).

if i were white i wouldn’t have to worry about my children being killed for existing.

if i were white i probably wouldn’t ever be followed around in the grocery store because people assume i’m stealing shit.

if i were white i’d be more likely to be hired.

if i were white i would never be pulled over for being “an illegal immigrant.”

i could keep going, trust and believe.
